When I was reading this chapter, memories from high school started going through my head. When I was a senior in high school I had to attend school for a full day, but I only had two classes I needed to graduate. I would have those classes in the morning and the rest of the day I took carpentry and welding classes. These courses were no where near intense as the kids at Chillicco, we were mostly there because we had to take something to full up the day.
In the summer time my high school had a summer program, where students can work in the school and get paid. All we wanted to get with our checks was the best clothes and shoes at that time. We worked hard for our money but it paid off when I bought my first pair of Jordan’s that year!
I also took some similar classes because I had open time slots in school. I worked my first summer job at a childcare facility and I always wondered why they didn't have a lot of jobs for the youth in my community. I would be working while everyone else would be at home. I know that there is one thing that chilocco instilled in their students was a hard work ethic. There wasn't anything that they didn't know how to do and they even knew what they didn't like to do.
ReplyDeleteI remember in high school i had the chance to only attend school in the mornings or half days, but I did not want to get an after school job because I felt I had better things to do with my time. I definitely don’t regret my decision since I was able to spend time with my friends.
ReplyDeleteI wish my senior year was open to 'fun' classes! I ended up having a whole bunch of classes my senior year thanks to my procrastinating. (I am still working on that!!) I do remember wanting to work and wanting my own money to buy cool things.
